Heavy metal; death, groove, black, tech, power, progressive, speed, thrash, stoner... The list goes on and on. Many years ago, metal fans were united under a common playing field and looked upon as outcasts and degenerates, jobless members of a segregated underworld that caused mayhem and destruction at every turn. But with its growing popularity metal has exploded into these countless sub-genres that often segregate themselves from one another. Metal has grown from being its own genre into countless sub-genres, and sometimes even sub-cultures of metal, different in every corner of the world. But metal fans; true fans, are one and the same, in every country around the world and in every genre known to their beloved heavy style of music. Head banging, moshing, and Dio’s infamous “devil-horns” are all symbols of heavy metal and no matter what genre, these symbols relate to every true metal fan. Today being an independent artist in such a fragmented musical culture is a constant struggle. Artists struggle to be heard, to be seen, to speak their minds and when it comes to metal; to not take shit but give it whenever possible. Aquila has been trekking this road for the last two years: even with members living in different cities across Canada, the band got together to finish two demos and extensively tour across Ontario. After successful touring with some wicked bands, making great friends, and playing almost 50 shows in less than a year, Aquila consisting of Mark Arruda (vocals), Matt Mcguire (drums), Anthony Rimac (guitar), Matt Shelson (guitar) and Adam Massicotte (bass) was better than ever and they threw everything they had into their debut album, Imperium. Recorded, mixed and mastered by Glenn Fricker (Bloodshoteye, Woods of Ypres and Face Down) of Spectre Sound Studio in Windsor, Ontario in January of 2009. The 10 track album features improvements from the demos and then adds some juicy new material for the thirsty metal ears looking for a tall glass of badass, hard hitting riff-whiskey. The talent and musical expertise featured on this album speaks for itself, and Aquila has stepped up their game by devoting serious attention not only to the rhythm, riffs and melodies, but to style, variety and songwriting ability. Having conquered Southern Ontario, Aquila is now preparing to assault Quebec and the entire East coast of Canada for a few weeks in July 2009, before heading out to the West coast to explore the opportunities available to bands in B.C. and Alberta. Metal fans, watch the fuck out in a Canadian town near you!!
