Weapon is a blackened death metal group formed in 2003 by band mastermind Vetis Monarch. Even though the band was formed in Calgary, Canada, the true birthplace of Weapon can be traced back to Bangladesh, where frontman Vetis Monarch spent his formative years. According to Vetis, “I was born and raised in the East and therefore it’s in my blood; the rest of the band have a great appreciation for Indian, Middle Eastern and Oriental scales so the influence is unavoidable.” This Eastern influence, combined with the band’s gripping sense of musicality and lurching intensity, has made Weapon one of the more singular forces in metal over the last few years.
After self-releasing their demo in 2004, Weapon went on to release two EPs, 2005’s Violated Hejab and 2008’s Para Bhakti…Salvation, on Legion of Death Records and Full Moon Productions, respectively. Following these releases, Weapon was signed to The Ajna Offensive, where they would release their debut full-length, Drakonian Paradigm, in 2009.
The following year saw the release of From the Devil’s Tomb, the satanic masterwork that saw Weapon composing their most inspired work yet and receiving the highest acclaim of their career. Decibel Magazine called the album “Vicious, convincing and one of the finest Canadian metal albums to surface in ages” while Zero Tolerance called it “a work of beautiful destruction and untouchable martial prowess destined to slay all opposition."
Weapon’s resulting tour was also a massive success. In Vetis’ own words, “[Weapon’s] live shows are vicious, merciless and absolutely relentless – a sonic and visual assault on the senses.” This was confirmed during the band’s epic performance at the Rites of Darkness Fest, and on tour with acts such as Toxic Holocaust, 1349, Antaeus, Behemoth, Rudra, Inquisition, and Mitochondrion, throughout North America .
In 2011, Weapon was signed to Relapse Records, announcing that they were to begin work on their third full-length. The release comes highly anticipated, after nearly a decade of hard work that found the band building a steady following while also defining their own unique aesthetic. Combining spiritual meditation with brutal extremity, Weapon is, according to Revolver Magazine, "One of the best new bands to watch for out in black /death metal.”
2012 saw the band embark on a North American tour with black metal legends Marduk, converting more dark souls to their harrowing black arts. Now the band is preparing to release their Relapse debut 'Embers and Revelations' in October of 2012. The album will surely be their biggest musical statement yet, as Weapon prove to be a band filled to the brim with devilish creativity and maximum potential.
