Kathryn Kaye grew up in the Appalachian Mountains of southeastern Kentucky. She began playing piano at the age of four, and music immediately became an essential part of her life. She majored in voice and keyboard in college, after which she moved to Germany to further her training. Prior to and during her years in Germany, Kathryn performed professionally as a folk singer and soprano soloist in concerts, recitals, and operas, and she has appeared as a solo performer on television in both Germany and the United States.
Kathryn has been influenced by the simple harmonies of the folksongs and hymns that she heard, sang, and played as a child, by her years of experience with classical music, and by the beauty of the Rocky Mountains where she now lives. Her music ranges from compositions with strong, emotional melodies through more contemporary, meditative, instrumental pieces.
Her first CD, Dreaming Still, was released in January 2011. The album was produced by Will Ackerman and recorded, mixed, and mastered by Corin Nelsen at Imaginary Road Studios in Windham County, Vermont. The 14 original tracks on Dreaming Still include songs for solo piano, and songs for which Kathryn is joined by several world-class musicians, including Charlie Bisharat (violin), Eugene Friesen (cello), Dan Greenspan (bass), Jill Haley (English horn), Derrik Jordan (percussion), Noah Wilding (vocals), and Will Ackerman (percussion). Reviewers were enthusiastic about Dreaming Still, and the album was #1 on the ZMR New Age/Ambient/World Top 100 music chart for the first two months following its release (http://www.zonemusicreporter.com/charts/top100.asp).
Kathryn's second CD, Heavy as a Feather, was released in December 2011. Produced by Will Ackerman, and recorded and mixed by Tom Eaton at Imaginary Road Studios, the album was mastered by Corin Nelsen of SynchroSonic Productions. The outstanding studio musicians on this CD include Will Ackerman (guitar), Charlie Bisharat (violin), Tom Eaton (accordion), Eugene Friesen (cello), Jill Haley (English horn), Ramesh Kannan (percussion), Tony Levin (bass), and Michael Manring (bass).
