One of the most versatile and in demand composers working today, Rob has won no less than six major awards for his work and received nominations for a further five. Three Ivor Novellos , a BAFTA and two RTS Awards have amply confirmed his ability to write distinctive music for any genre, whether that be psychological thriller or quirky comedy, action-adventure or political docu-drama. Equally at home writing for orchestra, smaller bands or working with samples, his aim has always been to create boldly cinematic music that intimately supports and enhances the drama on-screen.
Rob’s recent film credits include The Lives of the Saints , directed by Rankin and Chris Cottam , the South African set Red Dust, starring Hilary Swank, recently screened at the Toronto Film Festival and two ary features: Nick Broomfield’s Aileen: The Life & Death of a Serial Killer and Game Over: Kasparov & The Machine directed by Vikram Jayanti. He also scored Deathwatch, the horror film starring Jamie Bell and The Escapist from Sky Pictures, directed by Gillies MacKinnon. He is about to begin work on Mrs. Ratcliffe’s Revolution with director Billie Eltringham and Assasin Films.
Rob was recently awarded a 2006 BAFTA, an RTS Award and an Ivor Novello Award for his beautiful score to the acclaimed Company Pictures/HBO drama Elizabeth I , starring Helen Mirren and Jeremy Irons. Last year he won the 2005 Ivor Novello Award for his score to the BBC’s Blackpool and in 2004 was EMMY nominated for his stunning work on Charles II . He won the 2003 RTS Award for his music on the BBC’s Daniel Deronda and was nominated for both a BAFTA and an EMMY Award for his score to the BBC’s dinosaur adventure The Lost World in 2001.
Rob’s other major credits include the film The Young Poisoner’s Handbook (Mass/British Screen/Pandora); Hillsborough , Jimmy McGovern’s BAFTA winning docu-drama for Granada, and the much praised series, The Long Firm and To The Ends Of The Earth , both for BBC2. He recently completed the much praised Jane Eyre, starring Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens, Jimmy McGovern’s The Street , also for the BBC, and the Channel 4 feature Longford, starring Jim Broadbent and Samantha Morton.
Other major ary credits include Channel 4’s Ancient Egyptians and the BBC’s Leonardo series, as well as James Ellroy’s Feast of Death for Arena, a feature length profile of writer James Ellroy; the 8 part War & Civilization (Worldview Pictures) for Discovery, Slaves in Paradise for Channel Four’s Cutting Edge, and A Death In The Family (October Films/Channel Four).
Rob has started 2007 with four exciting new projects: The feature film Mrs Ratcliffe's Revolution, which stars acclaimed comedienne Catherine Tate. Stuart A Life Backwards, a joint BBC and HBO one off drama by Sam Mendes' Neal Street Productions. Marie Lloyd, the BBC biopic of the risque yet legendary British music hall entertainer, and finally the HBO mini series, John Adams, which charts the life of the former President of the United States. Paul Giamatti takes the title role and the project is co-produced by Tom Hanks.
